21
Push the counter up - don’t be the one who hits 21
1
A shared counter starts at 0.
2
On your turn, raise the counter by +1, +2, or +3.
3
Whoever lands on exactly 21, drinks.
21 is the calmest game in Quickle and one of the deepest. A shared counter starts at 0 and passes around the table. On your turn you push it up by 1, 2 or 3, never past 21, and whoever is forced to land it on exactly 21 pays two chasers. With two players it is a solved puzzle. With a full table it turns into a game of reading who is about to be trapped and quietly making sure it is not you.
1
The magic numbers are multiples of 4. If you leave the counter on 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20, the next player cannot avoid giving you another multiple of 4, and 20 forces them to hit 21.
2
With three or more players, the maths only works for the last two moves. Focus on not being the person left on 18, 19 or 20 with the turn coming to you.
3
Count ahead by seats. Before you move, work out who will be holding the counter when it reaches the high teens, and steer it so that it is not you.
4
Small moves keep your options open early. Jumping by 3 every turn rushes the counter to the danger zone while it is still someone else's decision who lands there.
1
Reverse: hitting 21 lets that player pick someone else to drink instead. Turns the end of the count into a negotiation.
2
Pass once: each player may pass their turn once per game. It breaks the multiples-of-4 trick and rewards timing.
3
Countdown: the table starts at 21 and counts down to 0 instead. Same maths, and a surprising number of people get it wrong the first time.
21 is a maths puzzle with a social layer, and the drink at the end is decoration. It plays perfectly for points, and it is the game most likely to have the table arguing about strategy long after the round has finished.
